- METROPOLIS AND FORMER APOLLO
ASTRONAUT TO PRODUCE GROUNDBREAKING 3D EXPERIENTIAL FILM 'THE
LEGEND OF APOLLO' - LAUNCH VENUE LONDON SCIENCE MUSEUM
East Sussex, England, 5th February 2009…Metropolis Entertainment Limited, the UK based supplier of 4D motion effects attractions for the museums and visitor centre markets, announces that it has teamed with former NASA astronaut, Colonel David R Scott, Commander of Apollo 15, to produce a new 3D film, ‘The Legend of Apollo’. The film will open at the London Science Museum in mid-2009 to coincide with the 40th anniversary of the first lunar landing. During this period the Museum will be holding a special festival of space themed events to celebrate the anniversary and highlight the unique artefacts in its collections including the original Apollo 10 command module spacecraft that returned from the moon in May 1969.
During the full High Definition 3D film, the audience will observe a Saturn V launch from the Earth, the view from lunar orbit, lunar landing, driving the lunar rover, lunar launch, and re-entry into the Earth’s atmosphere as well as other unique sights and sounds of an Apollo expedition to the Moon.
Ownership and management of the intellectual property of the film will rest with a joint venture currently being established between Metropolis and STC, Ltd, whose president is David R. Scott. The film will draw on actual Apollo archival footage, recent satellite imagery of the Moon, and exceptional 3D computer animation created by Red Star Studio, Sheffield, England, under contract to Metropolis. Metropolis will also provide under a separate contract with the Science Museum the complete motion-effects theatre, including the projection, surround-sound, and seat motion. The film will be available for licensing to aerospace and science museums and other similar venues worldwide.
Creatively the film will be developed to integrate with all today’s simulation and effects technologies and to place audiences into a truly experiential environment where they not only see, but feel and sense what it was like to be part of a major historical event.
As a NASA astronaut, Col Scott flew on Gemini 8, Apollo 9, and as Commander of Apollo 15 led the first extended scientific exploration of the Moon which included for the first time a Lunar Roving Vehicle. More recently he was technical advisor to Ron Howard and Tom Hanks on the acclaimed feature film "Apollo 13". For the future Col Scott will be working with Metropolis to develop immersive simulation attractions with a space theme and geared particularly to interesting and involving young people in space exploration. As one of the few men ever to have been to the moon, he is dedicated to the ongoing development of space technology and to encouraging future generations to venture there again.
According to Doug Millard, the Science Museum’s Senior Curator ICT & Space Technology, “Our Exploring Space gallery and objects such as the Apollo 10 command module are some of the most popular attractions in the Science Museum – there’s nothing like seeing the real thing! Humankind is fascinated by space and the experiences of astronauts like Col David Scott, who is one of only twelve humans to have walked on another world. The new simulation theatre will be a welcome addition for all of our space travel fans and will add a new dimension to the incredible stories told in the galleries.”
Metropolis Entertainment, which acquired the assets of Camber Entertainment in 2005, has emerged as one of the world’s leading providers of simulation and motion effects theatres, 3D and High Definition content for the entertainment, educational and corporate sectors.
